Hello, 2013. It’s a Pleasure to Meet You.

My birthday, the holidays and ringing in the new year has officially come and gone in the blink of an eye. What a whirlwind the last month or so has been! Ever since Vegas, I’ve been go, go, go. As you can see, blogging has been low on the priority list between all the celebrating, baking, working, ’tis the season shopping and wrapping. Welp, sue me. Let me get you up to speed. The night before my birthday, my nearest and dearest gathered at my apartment for chili, wine and Christmas cookies with tons of laughs in between, just what I wanted. Mike was out of town on business for my actual birthday and I may have had a mid-20 crisis/breakdown (ahem, when I say mid-20, I of course mean 23…), but luckily Emily came to the rescue for a quick sweat sesh and dinner at the new Tommy Bahama restaurant. Hey, it’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to. Our meal was too good, as was the company (Em, her dad, Bob, and Bob’s girlfriend, Dianne). Live music, a tropical setting–I literally felt like I was on vacation–and birthday cake? Perfection. Thanks again! Mike made up for his absence the following day with a perfect-for-me dinner of salmon and roasted veggies over quinoa and a gorgeous bouquet of flowers. I’m. So. Spoiled.

Soon enough, it was Christmas. I headed back to Connecticut for good food, family and thoughtful gifts (13.1 was a common theme!) with new traditions and a new stove…FYI the holidays are never a good time for a stove malfunction but luckily, ours went on the fritz the day before Christmas Eve. Plenty of time to scramble and get a new one, right? 2012 had its fair share of ups and downs. I was in and out of New York interning, cruised with some of my bests for spring break, graduated from UConn, mourned the loss of two family members, enjoyed a summer of a whole lot of nothing, moved into Manhattan with my boyfriend of 5 years and started my dream career. I ran [my first] two half marathons, tackled a Tough Mudder and ran up the mountain I’ve skied down since I was a tot. I went dairy and gluten-free after suffering from tummy troubles for years. Fellow recent grads can probably relate when I say that this has been a weird limbo chapter of my life but certainly an exciting one. I’ve embraced city living more than I ever had expected although I still all too often find myself retreating to my comfort zone. This year, I need to start living, as I’ve put it. I have an itch to explore, learn and try new things. I have set an ambitious goal of six half marathon races this year, I want to get my spin on (SoulCycle every other week with my old roomie, Allie, why not!?) and have decided my body needs yoga again. Like desperately. Oh, and I have already signed up for another obstacle mud race in the summer. I never thought I’d say that. If 2012 has taught me anything, it is to be grateful for all that I have, appreciate loved ones and be patient, for hard work always pays off in the end. So cheers to 2012 but boy am I glad to start fresh this year. Let’s do it.
What fit goals/resolutions do you have set for 2013?

Birfday Recap

I had a great day yesterday…excluding my exams. Those were NOT fun but hey, they’re over! Here is a look at the celebration that took place last night.

The evening started off with the typical roommate photo shoot, courtesy of Taylor’s iPad. Speaking of Tay, how chic are those metallic Zara pants? She could rock a paper bag. I’m envious. PS: did you notice my hair!? I chopped it all off on Wednesday somewhat spontaneously. I guess that’s what finals week does to you.

After posing for photos, I opened the beautifully wrapped gift from my girlies. They’re so thoughtful and know me all too well.

We then headed into Hartford, where Emily was able to meet up with us for dinner at Trumbull Kitchen. It was absolutely incredible. We started with drinks (their signature cocktails are out of this world!) and a spinach artichoke dip appetizer. How about that for an action shot?

For an entree, I ordered the pan seared char special which was served over mashed potatoes with caramelized onions and snow peas. Every last bite was consumed.

Taylor got the BBQ Pork Sandwich…

Emily went with the Seafood Pad Thai…

and Gianna ordered the Grilled Marinated Hanger Steak. We couldn’t stop talking about how good everything was and we were so full that pants had to be unbuttoned in the car. TMI? All in all I could not have been happier. I’m blessed to have such amazing friends and family. A special thanks to those who made my special day so darn special. Love you all!

“Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength.” Betty Friedan

Today is a day of twos. It’s my 22 birthday and what better a way to celebrate than taking two final exams before noon? Woohoo! Well, at least I’m officially DONE after that. New York, New York for a month starting Monday! I simply cannot wait. Anyway…nothing too (hehe, journalism major humor?) rowdy planned for the evening, just a quiet dinner and cocktails with my two besties. In honor of my day of birth, I compiled a list of fun facts about yours truly. Hey, I’m a quirky, fun gal full of surprises so why the hell not?

1. I modeled when I was little.
2. I was a band geek (alto saxophone) in high school. I rocked that plume-topped hat and wool ensemble!
3. I was the co-captain of my ice hockey team my senior year.
4. I can flatten my nose.
5. My favorite food is seared ahi tuna, especially when it is sesame encrusted.
6. I’m a firm believer that the book is always better than the movie.
7. I only use black ball point pens. I hate blue more than anything and don’t even get me started with pencils…
8. I’m addicted to Pinterest and may already have every last detail of my wedding already picked out.
9. I love grocery shopping and could spend hours wandering the isles.
10. My favorite movie, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, was what inspired me to seek a career in journalism. Well, that and the fact that I have a collection of my favorite magazines dating back to 2000. There are stacks hidden in every crevice of my room at school and home…if that wasn’t a tell tale sign, I don’t know what is!

Peek-a-boo! I’d just like to add, when I asked Mike about a fun fact about me, he said that I’m obsessed with peanut butter. That was all my man of 4 1/2 years could come up with…I guess I’m not as quirky and fun as I’d like to think I am? Thanks babe! I guess another interesting fact is that I drive a huge, red SUV. Remember the episode of Laguna Beach when Kristin Cavallari’s car broke down on the side of the road? I drive that same Isuzu Trooper…but in fire engine red. (Yes, the fact that Kristin drove one made it even cooler back in the day.) I love my car and feel super badass driving it. Well, I’m off to take some tests and celebrate. Happy Friday!

Kru’s Day of Birth

Happy 18th birthday to my little sister, Kristen (aka Kru)! We celebrated by going out to a nice, casual dinner at a local pizza joint…I, of course, opted for a huge side salad with chicken instead of a slice of pie. Teehee.

Happy birthday, sis! I am so proud of you and have no doubt in my mind that you will excel to extraordinary heights next year pursuing your dreams at the University of New Hampshire
